Chinese Amazon

Dangdang is China's Amazon. I don't read Chinese, but the BBC article says that American self-help books are popular, in addition to American TV shows. Now 80 million Chinese are online, still a small percentage of the population, but that's up from 50 million according to NationMaster.com. Dangdang's founder Peggy Yu says that there are places in China where people don't have heating, but they do have internet. I know plenty of people who would rather have internet (broadband) than heating, so this isn't so strange to me.
